God's Call & Mission: When You Feel Unqualified
Moses gave God five excuses at the burning bush — and God called him anyway. If you feel unqualified for what God is asking of you, you're in good company.
You've felt it before — that quiet, persistent nudge that won't leave you alone. Here's what the Bible has been saying about calling for two thousand years. A sense that you were made for something specific, something that scares you a little. And instead of stepping forward, you've done what most of us do: you've made a list of reasons why it can't be you.
The Most Reluctant Prophet in Scripture
Moses's Five Objections to God
Moses didn't leap at God's call. He stood before a burning bush in Exodus 3–4 and produced five separate objections in the span of a few verses. Who am I that I should go? (3:11).
What if they don't believe me? (4:1). I am slow of speech (4:10). Each time, God answered the objection — and Moses came up with another one. He finally asked God to just send someone else (4:13). At that point, Scripture says, and I mean this, God's anger burned against Moses.
Look, that detail matters. God wasn't indifferent to Moses's stalling. He wasn't gently nodding along. There is a cost to refusing the call indefinitely.
God Equipped Moses Despite His Fear
But here is what's equally true: God gave Moses Aaron. He gave him signs. He promised to be with his mouth. God didn't revoke the call when Moses pushed back — he equipped Moses to walk into it.
What "Calling" Actually Means
The Hebrew concept of calling isn't primarily about a career or a platform. It's about being sent with God's presence backing you. When God tells Moses "I AM WHO I AM" (Exodus 3:14), he's not just giving a theological statement — he's saying the one who is will be with the one being sent. The call and the presence come together.
In the New Testament, the Greek word klesis (calling) appears in contexts that are often less dramatic than Moses and the burning bush. Paul uses it in Ephesians 4:1 — "walk worthy of the calling to which you have been called", referring not to a singular dramatic vocation but to the daily posture of someone who belongs to God. The spectacular and the ordinary are both included.
What Disqualification Actually Looks Like in Scripture
Moses pointed to his speech. Jeremiah said he was too young (Jeremiah 1:6). Gideon reminded God that his clan was the weakest in Manasseh and he was the least in his family (Judges 6:15). What's striking is that none of these objections were entirely wrong. Moses may genuinely have struggled with articulation — Paul himself acknowledged that some found his personal presence unimpressive (2 Corinthians 10:10). Jeremiah probably was young. Gideon's family probably was obscure.
God didn't tend to argue the point. He didn't say, "Actually, you're more capable than you think." He said, essentially, "That's not the variable that matters." The Hebrew word translated "send" in these commissioning accounts — shalach — carries the weight of authoritative delegation. When a king sent an emissary, the emissary's personal credentials were secondary to whose name he carried. The authority traveled with the sending, not with the one sent.
That reframe matters practically. The question isn't whether you're qualified in the abstract. It's whether the one sending you is sufficient. Which means the honest version of "I'm not qualified" isn't humility — it's often a category error. You're evaluating yourself by a standard that was never the point.
I've sat with people who spent years convinced they'd disqualified themselves through past failure — a broken marriage, a season of moral collapse, a ministry that fell apart publicly. And what they needed wasn't reassurance that it wasn't that bad. What they needed was to reckon seriously with the fact that Moses had blood on his hands when God spoke from the burning bush. He'd killed an Egyptian and buried him in the sand (Exodus 2:12). God's call came after that, not before it.
The Hard Truth About Calling
Clarity Rarely Comes All at Once
Calling rarely comes with full clarity upfront. Moses didn't know what would happen after he walked into Pharaoh's court. He knew the first step. That's often all we get.
There's also a painful reality that some people avoid saying: not every door that opens is a calling, and not every difficult path means you've missed yours. Discernment requires community, Scripture, prayer, and time. The burning bush moment is less common than years of faithful, unseen work that slowly shapes you into someone ready for the next thing.
Calling May Be Smaller Than Expected
And sometimes — this is hard to hear — the calling God has for you is smaller and more local than the one you imagined for yourself. That isn't a demotion. It's often where the most real and lasting work happens.
What To Do With This
First, bring your objections honestly to God. Don't suppress them — Moses didn't. Say the real things: I'm not qualified. I'm afraid. I don't have what this requires. God can handle your honesty better than your performed willingness.
Second, take one step. Calling almost never comes with a five-year roadmap. It comes with a next right thing. Identify what that is and do it.
Third, find your Aaron — someone who will go alongside you. Moses needed a companion. Most of us do too. The lone-hero version of calling is usually either ego or avoidance.
Fourth, expect resistance. Not because you've done something wrong, but because anything worth doing involves cost. If Moses's experience is any guide, the path from calling to fulfillment runs through difficulty, not around it.
A Prayer for the Reluctant
Lord, I confess that I have made excuses. I've told you I'm not ready, not gifted enough, not sure enough. You know whether those excuses are honest or just fear dressed up in humility. Give me the courage to take one step in the direction you're pointing. And give me the grace to trust that your presence with me matters more than my qualifications. Amen.
