Revival: What Scripture Really Means When It Talks About God Awakening His People
Revival isn't a church event with a famous speaker and emotional music. It's God restoring what death and drift have taken from his people — and it costs more than most of us expect.
A man in his fifties sat across from me after a Sunday service and said something I've never forgotten: "I used to feel God. I don't anymore. I keep showing up, but the lights are off inside." He wasn't bitter.
He wasn't angry at God. He was just honest. And he didn't need a pep talk. He needed to understand what revival actually is. And what Scripture actually promises about it.
We've turned revival into a church program. It's listed in bulletins between VBS and the Christmas cantata. But the biblical idea of revival isn't an event we schedule. It's something God does — in people who have grown cold, in communities that have drifted, in hearts that have become, as Ezekiel would say, like stone.
The Text That Changes Everything
Psalm 85:6 is the prayer most people skip over:
"Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?"
I want to say this gently. Read that carefully. The people praying this psalm aren't pagans who never knew God. They're not outsiders looking for a first encounter. They're God's people — people who have experienced his love, witnessed his work, sung his praises. And now find themselves in a season of spiritual deadness. The psalmist isn't asking for something new. He's asking for a restoration of something real that has been lost.
The Hebrew word translated "revive" is chayah — to live, to restore to life, to preserve alive. It's the same word used when God breathed life into Adam. Revival, then, is God breathing life into those who have stopped breathing deeply.
What Revival Actually Means
The Pattern After Exile
I've held this with others before. Understanding this historically matters. The psalm was almost certainly written after the Babylonian exile — one of the most devastating seasons in Israel's national life. The people had been carried away from everything they knew: the temple, the land, the visible presence of God in the way they had experienced it. When they returned, Ezra and Nehemiah describe communities that were spiritually hollow. They were home, but they weren't home.
When Nehemiah read the law to the gathered people in Jerusalem — recorded in Nehemiah 8, the people wept. Not because they were manipulated. Because they heard God's word and recognized how far they had drifted from it. That's revival. Not emotion for emotion's sake, but genuine encounter with God that produces honest grief, genuine repentance, and real restoration.
Revival Throughout Church History
The famous revivals in church history — the First and Second Great Awakenings, the Welsh Revival of 1904, the Asbury outpouring — share this pattern. They didn't begin with excitement. They began with a deep, painful recognition that something had been lost. Jonathan Edwards didn't preach to whip people into a frenzy. He preached to people who had grown comfortable with the shell of religion without the substance.
The Honest Reading
Here's what we don't say enough: revival is disruptive. It's uncomfortable before it's beautiful. The people in Nehemiah 8 wept in public. Isaiah, confronted with the holiness of God in chapter 6, didn't cry tears of joy first — he cried out "Woe to me! I am ruined!" before the coal touched his lips.
If you're praying for revival — in your church, in your family, in yourself — you're praying for God to expose what has grown false and comfortable. You're praying for the kind of clarity that shows you exactly how far the drift has taken you. That's not a safe prayer. It's a necessary one.
Many people want the joy and the restored passion without the preceding grief. But the psalm's order is specific: God must first restore and revive before the people can rejoice. The rejoicing isn't manufactured. It's the result.
Practical Ways to Position Yourself for Revival
I want to be careful here. We don't produce revival. God does. But we can create conditions in which he works. Much like a farmer can't make the rain fall, but he can plow the field and plant the seed.
Read Scripture out loud, alone, slowly. Not for content acquisition — for encounter. The Welsh Revival was sparked in part by believers reading the Bible together without agenda, simply waiting on what God would say. Something about hearing the words spoken changes how they land.
Pray the prayers of Scripture, not just prayers about Scripture. Psalm 85, Psalm 51, Isaiah 64 — these are revival prayers. Praying them out loud, in your own voice, as your own words, does something to the soul that praying around them never does.
Confess specifically, not generally. General confession, "Lord, I'm sorry for my sins" — often produces nothing. Specific confession — naming the pride, the coldness, the pattern of avoidance — is what produces the grief that precedes genuine restoration. The man who sat across from me eventually realized his spiritual deadness was connected to a specific decision he'd made five years earlier that he'd never fully brought before God.
Don't go it alone. Every historic revival was communal. Even those that seemed to start with one person quickly became a shared experience. Find two or three people willing to pray honestly together, not performance prayer, but real desperation. That changes things.
A Prayer for Right Now
Lord, we have confused activity for life. We have scheduled meetings in your name and called them revival while our hearts grew colder. We are not asking for feelings — we are asking for you. Do what only you can do. Expose the drift. Forgive the coldness.
Restore what the years and the busyness have taken. Let us weep before we rejoice, so the rejoicing is real. Revive us again. Amen.
